The Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre provides nature-based experiences for school groups, community groups, and the public.
The centre is less than 2km from Churchlands Green. It provides information about the area's history and biology, whilst offering expansive views over Herdsman Lake.
The Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre is located in the suburb of Wembley and is accessible via Selby Street. It sits on the southern side of Herdsman Lake and is located within the Herdsman Lake Regional Park.
The Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre (formerly the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre) was opened in 1984. It is operated by the WA Gould League - a local not-for-profit organisation. The WA Gould League was formed in 1939 and maintains strong relationships with many schools in WA. Over 7,500 students take part in their environmental education programs, each year.

It was the WA Gould League who first proposed the preservation of Herdsman Lake (and the construction of a research centre) in the early 1970s.
On the 20th of September of 2021, a grand ‘re-opening’ event took place to celebrate the refurbishment of the centre. The event was attended by a number of dignitaries including the Premier of Western Australia Mark McGowan and the Honourable Amber-Jade Sanderson (Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Commerce).

Visitors to the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre can also immerse themselves in the natural wonders of the Olive Seymour Boardwalk. The boardwalk protects the fragile swamp ecosystem (animals, plants, land and water systems) whilst allowing visitors to explore comfortably.
The Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre has now been operating for 40 years. It forms an important educational hub for children and adults in context of nature and sustainability.
